The Grafton "Popular #2" open-back short-scale tenor banjo is the higher-grade entry-level model in the range. Despite its low price, it still embodies really good design and construction - and features 24-bracket heavy-duty hardware, twin co-ordinator rods and a heavy tailpiece. These are things that lots of banjos at much higher prices don't have!
Here is the specification for the "Popular #2" model:- 11" cast alloy rim with notched tension ring, 24 heavy-duty brackets and an integral flattop tone ring; 17 fret truss-rodded neck with edge binding and hand-dressed fretting; 2-point neck attachment with twin co-ordinator rods for extra stability; 4: 1 ratio good quality planetary banjo tuners; solid armrest and good quality heavy tailpiece. It comes with top grade strings & bridge and is expertly set-up for optimum playability. The cosmetics are rather more conventional than the "Gem #2" and is has a good satin lacquer finish; typical for the price point (most of the money is spent on tone & playability!)
All this adds up to the best "higher-grade entry-level" open-back short-scale tenor banjo available in the UK at the moment - for sound, playability and stability, nothing else in this price bracket comes close .... Just the ticket for the new player or for someone moving up from that dodgy "first buy".
Built in the UK from imported parts.
A resonator model already exists (listed below) and retro-fit "bolt-on" resonator kits will be available later in the year
