Vintage banjos - 4-string & other

The expression "Vintage Banjos" means banjos originally manufactured before 1940; though they may, of course, have some newer components - the listings will make this clear.

Bruno open-back mandolin banjo

Bruno open-back mandolin banjo - £195.00

This is a nicely restored example of a pretty standard American mandolin banjo from the 1920's. Bruno were wholesalers/retailers in New York and obtained their instruments from various sources - often, but not invariably, from Rettberg & Lange. This banjo plays nicely, stays in tune well and has a pleasant tone.

All used banjos are fully overhauled in our workshops before being offered for sale. They are refurbished as necessary and get a thorough set-up job as well as new strings & a new bridge. Apart from the cosmetic condition (which will inevitably show some signs of prior use - it's not really possible to play an instrument for any length of time without leaving some marks ! ), these used banjos are guaranteed for 12 months from date of purchase - just the same as a new banjo. If you would like to buy an outfit with a hard case or gig bag + the usual range of useful bits & pieces, please go to the "Banjo Cases & Gig Bags" page where you will find a wide selection of outfits (arranged by type of banjo) to look at. As the used banjos may not be exactly the same as the brand new versions listed on this site (designs & sizes change from time to time), you may not get exactly the same items that are illustrated - but you will get things that are appropriate to the used banjo you've bought and of equivalent or higher value.

Kay resonator standard-scale tenor banjo

Kay resonator standard-scale tenor banjo - £225.00

This is a rather "scruffy" example of a well-known type made in Chicago around 1930. It has been tastefully modernised (Remo head, vintage-style planetary tuners, reproduction tailpiece & armrest etc) and is now playing very nicely. The finish shows signs of many lively nights in the pub so it's attractively priced .....

Weymann Style 135 resonator 22

Weymann Style 135 resonator 22" scale tenor banjo - £295.00

This banjo was made in Philadelphia in the 1920's. It was originally an open-back but is now fitted with a period but non-original resonator - which can be easily detached for open-back use. It has been tastefully modernised (Remo head, vintage-style planetary tuners & armrest etc) and is now playing very nicely. The finish is fairly decent and it has a good tone.

Bacon Style

Bacon Style "C" resonator standard tenor banjo - £295.00

This banjo was made in Groton, Conn. in the 1920's. The Style "C" is a fairly basic model from the Bacon Banjo Company. THis one is a bit odd - it was clearly originally build as an open-back model and it has the 10" rim normally associated with the mandolin banjos from this range. The resonator and flanges are period but not original to this banjo. It has been tastefully modernised (Remo head, vintage-style planetary tuners, tailpiece & armrest etc) and is now playing very nicely. The finish is pretty good and the tone is nice - it might make a good travelling instrument or perhaps suit someone who wants a "smaller-than-usual" standard tenor banjo.
